I have been in many bars and restaurants in Germany, Mark Galaghers MANOR OCTOBERFEST is as close as you get to having proper German food and beer and without the jet-lag! The wursts and meats are great and the beer is always fresh. The staff is second to none. Hats off and Prost!! |

By far, Manor Oktoberfest is the most spacious best served German restaurant around. The location is great and the food is out of this world. Plus, their beer selection is kick-ass. |

This is the best thing to happen in Forest hills. The appetizers are good, the entrees are fabulous and a beer for every taste there is. The prices are affordable and the staff is friendly. So why wait? Come and enjoy yourself. I love it. |

I've been here two days in a row to celebrate Manor’s Oktoberfest grand opening, something that is quite a feat since I don't like going to the same restaurant more than once a month. Why? To take advantage of their $5 apps and $4 half liter draft beers. When you think of Oktoberfest, you're probably thinking of a beer garden or some sort of massive bar with lots of beer, pong, darts, and drinking games. But this place is far from that, resembling more of a casual group dining ambiance than a hole in the wall party bar. On the right is the dining room, with 10 wood-lacquered tables and 4-5 booth tables that can easily fit 8 people each. On the left, is a narrow lengthwise bar that runs along the wall. There is a half-wall partition separating the bar and dining room, which doesn't give a lot of privacy but really opens up the layout of this restaurant. Throughout the restaurant, there are several 40" LCD TVs showing the local sports games. Situated in the very rear, is a private room for parties. During the grand opening, they had a live band, raffles and giveaways which brought in a decent crowd. On Wednesday, it brought a lot of young 20-30 age folk. Today (Thursday), more of the 50+ crowd came, which made me ask what kind of clientele is this restaurant catered for. Service was varied. The first day, our waitress was very courteous and amicable, always having a smile on her face and making sure we got whatever we needed. Today was the total opposite end of the spectrum, where our waiter was a bit aloof and uncaring, but I will give him credit for dropping by several times to check up on us. For the two days, we tried a variety of apps and entrees: Coconut fried shrimp with Asian dipping sauce ($10) - deep-fried fish with coconut flakes. The dipping sauce was hot-and-sour, resembling more of the Asian flare. Hot Wings with bleu cheese dressing and celery ($8) - about 8 crispy wings covered in a tangy sauce that did not have the least bit of heat. Decent though I was hoping for a little bit more spice. Chicken Fingers with fries ($10) - 5-6 pieces of chicken fingers about 3" in length. Crispy and tender served with yummy honey mustard sauce. The chicken fingers sat on a decent-sized bed of crispy fries that filled the whole plate. Onion rings fried in beer batter ($6) - About 8-10 onions rings varying in size, from 2" to 4" in diameter. The onion rings were crispy and the onions inside were soft yet still maintained a nice crunch. These onions were more of the slippery kind where if you're not careful, the whole onion will slip out of the beer-battered shell. Herring in cream sauce - savory bits of pickled herring blended with onion and sour cream served over greens ($9) - I can't say this was a favorite among anyone at the table. The herring was a bit fishy and overdosed with sour cream dressing. Blah.....Mozzarella sticks - served with hot marinara dipping sauce ($7). 8 average-sized sticks served with hot and gooey mozzarella. Standard-fare, but nonetheless yummy!!! Smoked black forest bacon - hot sizzling with ripe tomato and onion ($8) - 4 pieces of thick bacon (somewhat like applewood bacon) without a lot of fat. The bacon had a slight crunch to it, neither too salty or oily. I'd have to say this dish was a bit boring, with 4 normal bacon strips sitting on top of slices of tomato and red onions. Potato pancakes with applesauce ($6.50) - 4 oval-shaped potato pancakes resembling the hash browns you might find at McDonald's served with a small cup of Mott's-like applesauce. The slightly oily potato pancakes were slightly overcooked, a bit too crispy and burnt on the outside, but the inside still maintained its moistness. Entrees: Bratwurst & Knockwurst ($16) - each about 5-8" in length sitting on a bed of sauerkraut and red cabbage. I'm not the connoisseur of sausages, so I'd have to say the bratwurst was decent with a nice blend of spices and not too salty or bland. The knockwurst was a bit airy, resembling something more of the kielbasa family. I wasn't a big fan of the knockwurst and could have easily gone for another brat. Bratwurst Sandwich ($6) - 6" bratwurst served in a hero with a heaping serving of sauerkraut and a side of potato side (which I believe is an additional charge). Same bratwurst from above, the brat was a bit small for the hero which made the sandwich slightly dry and too bready, even with all the sauerkraut. Overall, we had a great time during both dining experiences. For a normal dining experience, the appetizers and sandwiches are decently priced, though the entrees are slightly more expensive than is expected. Food was delicious though nothing out of this world. The big question I keep asking myself is when the live band is no longer there, this place is going to be fairly quiet. I definitely think they need to add a jukebox, maybe a live band some nights, or just get some tunes going to get this place rocking and a bit more laid back. |
